I was watching Rally Sweden this weekend... (anyone else trying out WRC All Live???). They commented several times that when they have a good solid ice base, the studded tires work better the harder the drivers push. Especially in braking performance. The harder you brake, the harder the studs dig into the ice. One of the drivers said it’s almost like driving a downforce dependent road car... the faster you’re going the more grip you have.
As I watched the news this morning with reports of accidents from all over the KC Metro area, I figured it out! The people around here must think the same logic applies to all season tires! Brake harder, turn later, accelerate faster and your tires will have more bite.
Now If I could only find a source for four inch wide wheels for my Forester XT so I could run those trick Mickey Mouse spare winter rally tires.

For much of the mid-west there has been significant brain-drain for generations. The best and brightest left and the people left behind stayed either due to a sense of responsibility, the inherent inertia of the status quo, or because they lacked the skills/intelligence to escape. Otherwise, how would you explain people living in Iowa?
Combine that with the fact that the average American is pretty awful at driving to start with, and you get a situation where people who should be better at driving in the winter (seriously, it happens every year) just can’t be bothered to drive well.
Hell, people get drunk and die outside every winter. You just can’t fix stupid.

I think you just might be right. Some must have even taken note of the skinny tires as well, judging by the donut-wearing (on the front tire, of course) Sentra that blew by me doing ~70 amid the icy slush this morning.

This is my wife’s driving logic regardless of weather. Pretty sure her driving will have something to do with how I die.

Of course! Everyone knows that skinny tires are better since they cut through the slush to the harder ground underneath.
